Meet The Captains

Captain John Melino

My name is John Melino. While not born in Alaska, I have an addiction to it. You will soon see why. I have been on the water from Kodiak to Juneau for 15+ years and before that Hawaii, Puerto Rico, USVI & BVI. I hold a 200 Ton Near Coastal USCG License, with Unlimited RADAR and Commercial Assistance Towing. Currently earning Local Limited Master of Towing.

I am qualified as:
  • Emergency First Responder
  • PADI MSDT
  • Level II Hazmat Qualified
  • SEAPRO Oil Spill Response Captain
And, I’m known in the community as an aggressive boat driver with a ” Yeah, we can do that!” attitude.

Captain Trevin Carlile

Captain Trevin Carlile was born and raised in rural Alaska on Kupreanof Island, with the sea just outside his door and a father who served as a maritime officer on the Alaska Marine Highway. From the time he could walk, Trevin was at the helm, learning and exploring the waters of Southeast Alaska.
Though he traveled extensively throughout the Lower 48 and abroad, he always returned to the islands of Southeast Alaska that called him home. Trevin worked for over five years at the Juneau boatyard, repairing vessels and eventually becoming the lift operator, before returning to the sea as a licensed captain for Melino’s Marine Services.
Since that day, he has rescued countless boats, yachts, ships, and stranded sailors in all kinds of challenging weather. One of his greatest strengths is adaptability. Need a boat pulled out of a tree (yes, it has happened)? A ship stopped from sinking? A giant log towed off your beachfront? Captain Trevin will find a way to get it done. He truly embodies the “Yeah, We Can Do That” philosophy of Melino’s Marine Services.

I am qualified as:
  • USCG Licensed Captain
  • EMT 1
  • Ham Radio Operator
  • Level I Hazmat Qualified
  • SEAPRO Oil Spill Response Captain

Captain Captain Sarah Ryan

Captain Sarah Ryan was born in Homer, Alaska, the daughter of fisherman Hank and Mary Kroll. She grew up a true Alaskan bush kid on a homestead in Tuxedni, on the west side of Cook Inlet, staked by her grandfather in 1942. Sarah was homeschooled there, spending much of her childhood between Tuxedni and the village of Seldovia. She got her first skiff at just four years old.

Fishing came naturally to her, and she spent summers set net fishing with her parents. She also endured four winters in the bush—canning, cutting wood, smoking salmon, hunting, and shoveling to survive. Later, Sarah attended the University of Alaska Southeast, where she majored in Biology and English Literature.

She began working for Melino’s Marine Services in 2015 after driving several tour boats in Juneau and earning her 100-ton license along with her commercial assistance towing endorsement. Sarah also worked as a Protected Species Observer and Naturalist.

Having driven skiffs long before she was old enough to drive a car, Sarah is the perfect fit for Melino’s Marine Services. Cool, calm, collected, and quiet, she makes sound decisions and has a natural ability to read the sea.

“Your kindness, sense of humor and total dedication to seeing these guys (whales) close up really made our trip!"
